Gardening contributes to our enjoyment and appreciation of nature, the environment, biodiversity and wildlife. Gardeners in general have great concern for the natural environment, no group is more involved with interactions between plants, animals and insects, and gardeners have many opportunities to create and protect habitats for wildlife and wild flowers.

From its foundation in 1804, the Royal Horticultural Society has grown to be the world's leading horticultural organisation, demonstrating excellence in horticulture and promoting gardening. Members of the Society continue their commitment to gardeners through inspirational flower shows, gardens, and over 1,000 lectures and demonstrations making sure they are easy to access throughout the UK.

Their four flagship gardens - Wisley in Surrey, Rosemoor in Devon, Hyde Hall in Essex and Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire - not only provide year-round interest but also demonstrate the best gardening practices, new techniques and exciting new plants to try in your own garden.

To promote gardening even more widely the RHS has joined forces with over 80 gardens in the UK and 20 in Europe to offer free access to RHS members.

The Society's best-known venture is organising the world famous Chelsea Flower Show, but behind the scenes vital work by RHS botanists, entomologists, plant pathologists, plant physiologists, soil scientists and general horticultural advisers ensure that the best and most up-to-date advice is available for all.

Apart from Chelsea, the Society also organises two other superb Garden Shows - at Hampton Court Palace and Tatton Park in Cheshire.

The RHS is also committed to handing down the benefits of 200 years of gardening expertise to the next generation of gardeners. Students from all over the world apply for positions on the one- and two-year courses at the RHS Garden Wisley, and several thousand amateur and professional gardeners sit RHS examinations each year to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

As a charity, the bulk of the Society's funding comes from its membership, which now totals in excess of 320,000. They rely greatly on the support their members give them to fulfil their aim to protect Britain's gardening heritage and help gardeners everywhere.

Britain in Bloom is an all-inclusive campaign, organised by the RHS, that encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local areas for the benefit of local people. The campaign is the largest of it kind in Europe and incorporates floral features, permanent planting, wildflower meadows, planting for nature, fruit and vegetable gardening and much, more.

Other core elements include cleanliness and tackling issues of litter, graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Entries are encouraged to involve all sectors of the community such as town centre management, businesses, community groups, volunteers and schools to boost civic pride and help retain a local identity. Britain in Bloom also promotes good practice in the environment by encouraging recycling, the establishment of conservation areas and other sustainable projects.

The RHS encourages all communities to get involved to help create safer, cleaner and greener local environments.

Neighbourhood Awards The Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards is a unique initiative for small, resident-led communities just starting out on the cleaning up and greening up of their local areas. The scheme is non-competitive and welcomes groups taking the initial steps towards community improvements. While entries are not judged against each other, they are visited by Britain in Bloom experts who provide valuable feedback and helpful advice on how to develop current activities and encourage on-going improvements.
